Welcome!

The project “Pro-GIs: Intellectual Property Right extension & Geographical Indications protection for the benefit of EU-Thailand Trade” is aimed at strengthen Geographical Indication (GIs) products trade flows between EU and Thailand, improving protection (according to Reg. EC n. 510/2006) and increasing value (through the use of EU logo) of Thai GIs products.

Some Thai typical food and agricultural products have a considerable potential trade also outside Thailand (in particular in European Union). In the last years, Thailand Government, being aware of the additional value given to a product by GI tool, had registered as GI according to national legislation [Act on Protection of Geographical Indication B.E. 2546(2003)] about 20 Thai products.

Unfortunately the registration as Thai GI substantially gives none guaranties of protection in case of exporting products outside the Country because of the lacks in World Trade Organization’s Trips Agreements. Waiting for the stipulation of specific bilateral agreements for mutual recognition and protection of GIs between EU and Thailand, Thailand is now committed (through DIP) to extend GIs protection by registering Thai GIs products according to Reg. EC n. 510/2006. The project Pro-GIs targets to certification and registration according to Reg. EC n. 510/2006 of some selected Thai GIs products, allowing the transfer of competencies and know how in control procedures, certification and inspections on quality food from EU experts to Thai GIs lodgers and other stakeholders. The market potential in EU of selected Thai GIs products that will be certified and registered through the Project will be prospected through a qualitative marketing analysis.
